If you enjoy, a unique breakfast and lunch diner atmosphere you should visit the Ugly Mug Diner in Salem, Ma. The restaurant itself is very open when you walk in and one of the first things you notice is the multiple boards displaying all of their different drink options which range from flavored coffee to a variety of teas and sodas. I am a green tea girl all the way, so I had to try theirs. They also have a chalkboard in the back with the specials. One of the unique features of the Ugly Mug is the mugs themselves. On each table holding the creamers, and on the counter, you can find a variety of different styles of mugs, which you can purchase. All of the mugs have been donated, which adds a bit more hidden backstory to each cup you are sipping out of.

After carefully reviewing the menu, which has their story, and explanation of all of the mugs on the very cover, I decided on a Belgian Waffle with strawberries, blueberries and of course whipped cream. The restaurant was busy at the time, so it did take a while for the food to get to us, but when it did it was so delicious. The Belgian waffle had a wonderful vanilla flavor that extended through every bite. The fresh strawberries and blueberries paired well with the vanilla from the waffle. It was a nice touch that it was in fact fresh berries in their purest form, instead of macerated berries some restaurants have on their waffles. To top it all off the whipped cream I was obsessed with. Every piece on the plate worked so well with each other it made for a wonderfully sweet and delectable breakfast.

That was the second time I had gone to the Ugly Mug Diner. The first visit I made to the Diner was a few years earlier. After scouring the menu, I decided on Victoria & John’s Father & Daughter breakfast, which included 3 pancakes, bacon, eggs, hash, and a parfait. I should have taken the waiters surprise to ordering that for myself, as a warning because when it arrived the plate of food was bigger than my head. I probably should have gotten the order to share with someone, but I was naïve to the amount of food on the plate. The pancakes themselves were very sizeable and then add all the other food to that, definitely made it a meal fit for two.

So if you are ever in Salem and are in need of breakfast, I would recommend you check out the Ugly Mug Diner and all of its unique mugs.

(This visit was early march before the quarantine.)

Hi, thanks for stopping by!

Hey everyone! My name is Jillian DiLauro and I love food! I am a fiend for Italian cuisine and sweet things, even though I am what most people describe as a picky eater. Even so, food has always been a big part of my life; from learning to cook from my mom and from watching the cooking shows she always has on the television.
